Dig DNS Tool

The dig (Domain Information Groper) DNS tool is a command line too for querying DNS servers.

Examples

  • If you run dig google.com you will get a response with which IP address it resolves too.
  • If you run dig lfjlfjelfje.com (random URL) you will get a response with NXDOMAIN, meaning non-existent domain. This is the kind of error to look for when troubleshooting.
  • When updating DNS records for websites/servers you can use dig yourwebsite.com to check if the DNS record is updated yet.
